The incident left the 37-year-old male driver with severe “permanent” injuries, police said.
And he wasn’t the only one to experience such an attack. Nearly 20 similar attacks were reported to the police.
On Saturday, Dec. 26, at a little before 4 p.m., police responded to a report of an assault with a brick on Plantation Street in Worcester.
Upon arrival, the victim told police that while passing a red SUV, someone threw a brick at his vehicle, which smashed through his windshield, police said. The suspect SUV had been reported stolen, police said.
As police searched for the red SUV more reports of bricks being thrown at passing vehicles were called into the department, police said.
Police spotted a red SUV on Harrington Way and when they began to follow it, the SUV allegedly sped up and led officers on a chase to the area of Ashwood Street. At this point, the SUV stopped and two males allegedly got out of the vehicle and fled on foot, police said. There were two female occupants still in the SUV, ages 15 and 16.
Police allegedly caught up with the suspects on Houghton Street - two boys ages 15 and 16.
A total of 19 vehicles were damaged by bricks allegedly thrown by the suspects.
All four people that had allegedly been in the red SUV were arrested and charged with:
- Aggravated assault and battery by means of a dangerous weapon (brick),
- Assault with a dangerous weapon (brick) - 5 counts,
- Mayhem,
- Conspiracy,
- Malicious damage to a motor vehicle - 19 counts,
- Throwing missiles at a train or bus,
- And resisting arrest, police said.
In addition, the 16-year-old boy was charged with unlawful carrying of a dangerous weapon (brass knuckles) and carrying a dangerous weapon when arrested, police said.
Due to the juvenile status of the suspects, their names have been withheld.
